Boat Rental Near Tromsø – 24 Hours on Lyngenfjord, Your Way

Skibotn valley · Lyngen Alps · 90 min from Tromsø

★★★★★ 4.9 · 200+ verified reviews · 98% five-star

A 24-hour rental means exactly that. Pick up the boat in the afternoon, spend the evening on the fjord, watch the midnight sun hover above the peaks, sleep if you want to, and return the next morning. There are no checkpoints, no programme, and no schedule to keep.

You choose where to go. The fjord is calm and navigable. Head south toward the inner Skibotn tributary, follow the eastern shore toward the base of the Lyngen Alps, or simply anchor in a quiet bay and drop a line.

The rental accommodates 1 to 6 people, priced from NOK 2,000 per person. The full group rate for 6 people comes to NOK 12,000 — which, split six ways, works out to one of the most affordable ways to get on the water in Northern Norway.

Pick Up Your Boat at Skibotn – 90 Minutes from Tromsø

We are based at Gammelveien 142, Skibotn — the same farm where our huskies live and where our winter safaris depart. Getting here from Tromsø city centre takes approximately 90 minutes by car via the E8 and E6 highway. No ferries are needed.

At pickup, we walk you through everything: how the engine works, where the life jackets are stored, basic safety on the fjord, and our contact number in case you need anything during your rental. Most guests are ready to leave the dock within 20 minutes of arriving.

If you need a hire car for the drive to Skibotn, several rental agencies operate at Tromsø Airport. We recommend booking in advance during July, when vehicles and accommodation fill quickly across the region.

No Boat License Required – Rent and Explore Independently

The most common question we hear: “Do I need a boating license to rent a boat near Tromsø?”

The answer, for our rental, is no.

— Need to know

Norwegian Law and Recreational Boating – What You Need to Know

In Norway, certain boats require the operator to hold a *båtførerbevis* (boating license) — specifically, motorboats above a certain engine power used for hire. For the vessel we rent, no personal license is required from the renter. We operate the rental under our responsibility, and we verify at pickup that the renter is comfortable handling the boat.

What we do ask: pay attention during the handover. The engine is straightforward. The safety rules are simple — life jackets on children at all times, know how to stop the engine, stay within the fjord area we discuss at pickup. You do not need years of sailing experience to manage a motorboat on the calm inner waters of Lyngenfjord.

This matters, because it sets us apart from other operators in the area. Some require a license for anyone born after January 1, 1980 — which excludes most tourists under the age of 45. We don’t. If you are a responsible adult who has read this page, you are qualified to take out our boat.

Lyngenfjord: Where You’ll Explore

Lyngenfjord runs 87 kilometres from the outer coast to the inner fjord at Skibotn. At its widest, it stretches nearly six kilometres across. At its deepest, it drops more than 500 metres.

From our Skibotn base, you launch into the southern, inner section of the fjord — the most sheltered part. The inner fjord is calm, protected from wind by the surrounding mountains, and navigable for anyone comfortable in a small motorboat.

— the location

The Fjord, the Alps, and the Open Water

The defining feature of Lyngenfjord is the mountain wall. The Lyngen Alps rise directly from the eastern shoreline — not gradually, but in one dramatic surge from sea level to summits above 1,800 metres. In summer, the peaks are snowcapped even when the valley temperature reaches 20°C.

From the water, you see the Alps from an angle no trail gives you. The reflection in the fjord on a calm evening, the waterfalls that drop directly into the water, the rocky shorelines with no roads and no buildings — it is one of the genuinely wild parts of Norway that tourists rarely reach because reaching it requires a boat.

— what to do

Activities on the Water

The 24-hour rental doesn’t prescribe what you do. Most guests combine several of these:

Fishing: Drop anchor in 15–40 metres and jig for cod, coalfish, or sea trout. See the fishing section below.

Exploring the shoreline: The inner fjord has small bays and coves not accessible by road. Take the boat in close, cut the engine, drift.

Scenic cruising: Follow the western shore north toward the Lyngen Alps and back — a return trip of roughly 20–30 kilometres depending on how far you go.

Wildlife watching: Seabirds are plentiful. Seals are occasionally spotted. White-tailed eagles are common in the Lyngen region and sometimes visible from the fjord. Whales (orcas and humpbacks) move through the outer fjord in season — September–January is their peak period, which is outside our summer rental window, but seals and porpoises are possible in summer.

Photography: The combination of Arctic water, snowcapped peaks, and midnight sun light creates photographic conditions that are genuinely rare on the planet. The hour between 10pm and midnight in June and July produces a quality of light — warm, golden, raking — that is simply not available elsewhere.

Fishing on Lyngenfjord – Cod, Trout, and Arctic Waters

Lyngenfjord is one of Norway’s best known recreational fishing destinations. The water is cold, clear, and rich. You do not need a fishing license for sea fishing in Norway — the sea is free.

— the catch

What Can You Catch in Lyngenfjord?

Cod: The most reliable catch, especially at depth (15–60m). Present May–September. Caught by jigging with a simple metal jig.

Coalfish and pollock: Common in the upper water column, especially in late afternoon and evening.

Sea trout: Found closer to shore and river mouths. More challenging to target — a spinning lure along the shoreline is the most effective method.

Haddock: Less common in the inner fjord but possible.

Halibut: Present in the deeper sections of the outer fjord. Large halibut are occasionally caught, but they require patience, the right gear, and some luck.

Sea fishing in Norway is genuinely productive. The water is not overfished in the way that many coastal European fisheries are. Guests regularly catch cod on their first attempt with simple gear.

— tips and tricks

Fishing Tips for First-Timers

You do not need expensive equipment. A basic rod with a 20–30g metal jig, a short trace, and 0.30mm monofilament line covers most situations on Lyngenfjord.

Anchor in 15–40m of water and jig slowly along the bottom — raise the lure one metre, drop it, repeat. When you feel a strike, lift firmly and keep steady pressure as you bring the fish up.

The best fishing on Lyngenfjord is typically early morning (before 10am) and in the evening from 6pm onward. With a 24-hour rental, you can fish both windows: the evening before and the morning after.

There are no catch limits for recreational sea fishing in Norway. Anything you catch, you keep. If you want to transport fresh fish home, bring a cool bag and some ice.

Midnight Sun Boat Rental – Explore Lyngenfjord at 11pm in Full Daylight

From approximately 20 May to 26 July, the sun does not set in the Tromsø region. It dips toward the northern horizon around midnight and then rises again without ever disappearing. The sky never goes dark. The mountains stay lit.

On the fjord, this creates something that is simply impossible to experience anywhere south of the Arctic Circle.

— never ending day

What It’s Like to Boat Under the Midnight Sun

By 9pm, most tourists in Tromsø are returning from day trips, eating dinner, or preparing for bed. On the fjord, the light is just beginning to turn. The sun drops lower, the angle increases, and the light becomes the warm amber-gold of late afternoon — except it’s 10 o’clock at night and there are another four hours of this still ahead.

At 11pm, the Lyngen Alps are lit in a colour that doesn’t have a precise name — somewhere between orange and rose gold, with the snow on the peaks catching a cold blue at the very top. The fjord surface picks it all up.

With a 24-hour boat rental, you plan around this. Pick up the boat in the afternoon. Spend the early evening on the water. Fish if you want. At 10pm, find a sheltered bay, anchor, and watch the midnight sun do what no photograph fully captures. Return to Skibotn the next morning.

This is a specific, rare, and genuine experience. It is not marketing language. It is what happens on this fjord in June and July.

— when to rent

Best Months for Midnight Sun Boating Near Tromsø

Late May: The midnight sun begins around May 20. The fjord is calm and quiet; the season is just starting; other tourists are fewer. Water temperature is cold but fishing is productive.

June: Peak midnight sun. Summer solstice (June 20–21) produces the longest days and the most dramatic midnight sun effect. The best month for photography and the most popular for midnight sun boating.

July: High season. The midnight sun continues. Warm by Arctic standards. Trails are excellent; the fjord is at its most active with wildlife. Book early — July availability fills fast.

August: The sun begins to set again, briefly, but evenings remain very long until mid-August. Autumn colours begin on the hillsides above the fjord. The fishing is good.

September: Shorter days, cooler conditions, but the fjord is still open and navigable. A quieter experience with the possibility of seeing the early northern lights returning to the sky after the midnight sun season ends.

Family Boat Rental Near Tromsø – From Age 5

We built this rental to be inclusive. The same approach we take to dog sledding — no experience required, from age 5, full safety kit provided — applies on the water.

— for everyone

Who Can Join the Boat Rental?

Our boat rental is open from age 5. There is no upper age limit.

Adults with no prior boating experience can manage the boat comfortably after our pickup briefing. The inner fjord near Skibotn is calm, sheltered, and forgiving — it is not the open ocean. There are no dangerous currents or tidal hazards in the rental area.

Children join as passengers, as fishing assistants, as navigators-in-training. Many younger children find the combination of boat, fishing line, and open water more engaging than any guided tour.

For groups with young children (under 10), we recommend anchoring in a sheltered area rather than covering long distances. The fjord is interesting close up — you don’t need to travel far to have a full experience.

Groups of 1 to 6 people can rent the boat. Families of 4–5 fit comfortably with room for gear.

— safety first

Cycle the valley. Boat the fjord. Sleep under the midnight sun. That is a full Arctic summer day.
