What to Expect on the Trail

Once the dogs set off, the noise fades fast. Within minutes you are deep in Skibotn Valley, running through snow-covered pine forests at a comfortable pace, the trail winding upward toward views of the Lyngen Alps. You ride in tandem: one person stands on the runners and steers; the other sits in the sled. At the halfway point you swap positions, so both of you experience the joy of driving your own team.

The route covers 10–15 km depending on conditions, with your guide leading the way and a second guide sweeping from behind. Nobody is left on their own.

After the run, you warm up in our base hut over a bowl of traditional reindeer soup and fresh bread, with hot coffee and tea. There is plenty of time to cuddle the dogs before we drive you back to Tromsø city centre.

Where You’ll Run: Skibotn Valley and the Lyngen Alps

Not all dog sledding near Tromsø is equal. Location matters enormously, and ours happens to be spectacular.

— amazing location

Skibotn Valley – Pine Forests and Arctic Silence

Our kennel sits in Skibotn, a small community at the inland end of the Lyngenfjord, about 90 minutes east of Tromsø. The valley is sheltered from coastal weather, which means it holds snow reliably from December through late March – often longer than the coast. The trail runs through old-growth pine forest along the valley floor before opening into wider mountain terrain. There is no road noise, no crowds, and no artificial anything. Just you, the dogs, and the Arctic.

The Skibotn Valley is one of the most consistent snow destinations in the Tromsø region. While operators closer to the city can struggle with low-altitude slush, we run deep into the valley where the snowpack is reliable.

— arctic climate

The Lyngen Alps Backdrop

As the trail climbs, the Lyngen Alps come into full view to the west – a jagged line of 1,000–1,500 m peaks that rise directly from the fjord. On a clear day the panorama is jaw-dropping: ice-capped summits, frozen slopes, and the white ribbon of the trail stretching ahead of you with your team of Alaskan huskies pulling hard into the distance.

The Lyngen Alps are not a backdrop you see from a bus. You earn them by standing on the runners.

Self-Drive Dog Sledding – You Lead the Team

One of the most common questions we get: “Do I actually drive the dogs, or does the guide do it?”

You drive.

— you are the musher

How Self-Drive Works

On our dog sled tours near Tromsø you ride in pairs. One person stands on the back of the sled, holds the handlebar, and operates the brake. The other sits in the sled basket. At the halfway point on the trail, you swap. Every guest gets to be the musher.

Your guide rides ahead with a lead sled. There is always a sweep guide behind the last sled. Steering is intuitive – most guests get comfortable within the first five minutes. The dogs know the trail.

Before you set off, we run a full briefing on technique: how to brake, how to slow on downhill sections, how to encourage the dogs on the climbs. It takes about 20 minutes and leaves everyone confident.

— lIMITATIONS

Can Anyone Self-Drive?

Yes. You do not need any prior experience of dog sledding or winter sports. If you can stand on a flat surface and hold a handlebar, you can drive a dog sled. Our youngest junior musher was 8 years old; our oldest was 77. Normal fitness is all that is required.

Children under the age of 5 ride in the sled basket for their own safety. From age 5 upward, children can stand on the runners with a parent or guide nearby.

Family Dog Sledding Near Tromsø – From Age 5

Dog sledding near Tromsø with children is one of the most rewarding experiences we offer. Children are natural mushers – they are lighter on the sled, quick to learn, and completely fearless. The huskies love them.

— FOR THE FAMILY

Ages 5 and Up – Truly Inclusive

Our tours welcome guests from age 5. Children aged 5–7 ride in the sled basket while a parent stands on the runners. From age 8 onward, children can take a turn driving with a guide nearby.

The harnessing process before departure is a favourite for children: guides let the kids help clip in the dogs and learn each animal’s name. This connection with the huskies before the run makes the whole experience feel personal rather than touristic.

— EVERYONE IS WELCOME

Groups of 2 to 20

We accommodate groups from a couple on a romantic winter break to a company outing of 20 people. Larger groups get dedicated guides and a coordinated sled departure sequence. We recommend booking early for groups of 8 or more, especially in January and February.

Solo travellers are always welcome – we pair you with another small group so you always have a sled partner for the drive.

Our 70+ Huskies – Happy, Healthy, and Made for This

A question we welcome and respect: is dog sledding ethical?

— THE DOG IS A FAMILY MEMBER

Life at the Kennel in Skibotn

Our 70+ Alaskan huskies live at a purpose-built kennel on a working farm in Skibotn. They are bred for pulling and live for the trail. The excitement you see and hear when harness time approaches is not trained performance – it is genuine enthusiasm. Alaskan huskies in a working kennel environment are stimulated, social, and physically in their element during the running season.

Our dogs receive year-round veterinary care, run only in safe temperature conditions, rotate between rest days and trail days, and retire to family homes as pets when their racing days are done. We run with 6 dogs per sled, the team is never overloaded, and runs are paced to the dogs’ comfort, not a clock.

We are members of the Norwegian Sleddog Association (Norsk Trekkhundklubb) and operate within their welfare guidelines. You are welcome to ask any questions about our kennel practices before, during, or after your tour.

When Is the Best Time to Go Dog Sledding Near Tromsø?

Our dog sled season runs from 1 December to 31 March, dependent on snow conditions. Skibotn Valley’s inland location means we typically have reliable snow throughout this window, even in low-snow winters that affect operators closer to the coast.

December: The polar night creates a dramatic blue-dark atmosphere. Northern lights season is in full swing. Book early – this is our busiest month.

January: The coldest month, often the best snow conditions. Ideal for photography. Many guests book 3–6 months ahead for January slots.

February: Daylight begins to return. You may catch the first pale sun above the mountains while the dogs run. Still excellent snow in Skibotn Valley.

March: The sun is back and the light is extraordinary. Snow can thin late in the month at lower elevations, but the valley holds it well. A wonderful month for those who want light and snow together.

Booking advice: We recommend booking at least 4–8 weeks in advance for all months. January and February slots in particular fill weeks ahead. If you are travelling as a group of 6 or more, book 2–3 months out.
