24-Hour E-Bike Rental in Skibotn – Ride the Trails at Your Own Pace

Skibotn valley · Lyngen Alps · 90 min from Tromsø

★★★★★ 4.9 · 200+ verified reviews · 98% five-star

This is not a guided tour. It is a rental – and that distinction matters.

You arrive at our base in Skibotn, we fit the bike, run through the controls, and hand over the keys. From that moment, the next 24 hours are yours. Ride the valley trails in the morning, take a break for lunch, ride again in the evening under the midnight sun. No schedule to follow, no group to wait for, no guide setting the pace.

We have five Specialized Levo full-suspension e-MTBs available in small, medium, and large. Book one per person or book the fleet for a group.

Pick Up, Ride, Return – How the Rental Works

Arrive at our Skibotn base at your agreed pick-up time (coordinated at booking). We weigh you up for the right frame size, adjust saddle height and reach, and walk you through the five assist modes, the range indicator, and the controls. The whole handover takes about 20 minutes.

From there, you ride. The trail starts at the door. You can download routes from Trailforks or Komoot before you arrive – search “Skibotn” and you will find a network of marked trails from beginner-friendly valley loops to technical singletrack. We are happy to recommend specific routes at handover based on your experience level.

Return the bike within 24 hours of pickup in the same condition you received it. Punctures from trail riding are covered; damage from crashes or misuse is not.

The Bikes: Specialized Levo Full-Suspension E-Mountain Bikes

There is a meaningful difference between a city hybrid e-bike and a trail e-MTB. The Specialized Levo is the latter – built for the kind of terrain that defines Skibotn Valley.

— e-bikes

Specialized Levo: Why It Makes the Difference

The Specialized Levo is a full-suspension e-mountain bike. It has front and rear shock absorption, trail geometry, and a motor system that provides consistent, natural-feeling pedal assistance across all terrain types. This is not a bike that gets rattled apart on a rocky descent or bucks you over a root. It is designed for exactly the conditions you will find on the Skibotn trail network: mixed surfaces, inclines, loose terrain, and the occasional technical section.

Compare this to a city e-bike (upright riding position, rigid frame, road-oriented tyres) or an e-fatbike (heavy, slow, designed for snow rather than summer trails). The Specialized Levo is neither. It is a purpose-built trail machine with electric assistance – which means climbs that would be exhausting on a standard bike become manageable, and the descents remain engaging and technical.

The battery provides sufficient range for a full day of trail riding in Skibotn Valley. Expect 50–80 km of trail range on a full charge, depending on elevation gain and the assist level you choose.

— your bike

Bike Sizes and Fit

We carry five bikes in three sizes: small (approximately 155–170 cm), medium (170–180 cm), and large (180–195 cm). If you are between sizes, we recommend the larger frame for taller riders and the smaller for shorter. Email us at **booking@activenorth.no** before booking to reserve a specific size – availability fills up in peak season (July).

Where You’ll Ride: Skibotn Valley Trails and the Lyngen Alps

The terrain around Skibotn is one of the reasons this e-bike rental near Tromsø is different to anything you will find in the city.

— amazing location

Skibotn – A Mountain Biking Destination Known Across Northern Norway

Skibotn has a well-established reputation in the Norwegian mountain biking community. The valley floor sits in a bowl formed by the Lyngen Alps to the west and the Balsfjord plateau to the east. The trail network – built by riders over decades, catalogued on Trailforks and Komoot – ranges from easy gravel tracks along the valley floor to technical singletrack through pine forest and open hillside terrain.

The Lyngen Alps are visible throughout. From the valley floor, the peaks – up to 1,500 metres – rise directly out of the fjord across the water. From the higher sections of the forest trails, you gain clear sightlines to the mountain range without leaving the trail network.

This is not a contrived tourist route. It is a real trail network, used year-round by local riders, and the Specialized Levo is the right tool for it.

— different options

Trail Options from the Skibotn Base

Beginner / easy: Flat valley tracks and gravel roads along the valley floor. Ideal for first-time e-bike riders or guests who want a scenic pedal without technical demands. 15–30 km depending on how far you ride.

Intermediate: Forest climbs with valley panoramas. Some elevation gain (200–400 metres), mixed surfaces. This is where the Specialized Levo’s suspension and assist modes make the biggest difference. 25–45 km.

Advanced: Technical singletrack sections with roots, rocks, and steeper gradients. For experienced mountain bikers who want a challenge even with motor assistance. Combine with the intermediate network for a full-day effort.

We recommend Trailforks or Komoot for pre-trip route planning. Search for “Skibotn” and filter by difficulty. Download the route offline before you arrive – mobile signal can be patchy in the valley.

— protected nature

A Note on the Lyngen Alps Protected Area

The Lyngen Alps are a designated landscape-protected area. **E-bikes are not permitted within that protected zone**, which covers the high mountain plateaux and glacial terrain above the valley. This is a Norwegian regulation that applies to all e-bikes across the country in similar protected areas.

The Skibotn trail network – where our rental bikes operate – is not in the protected zone. The trails are in the valley, forest, and lower hillsides outside the protected boundary. You are riding in one of Norway’s best MTB destinations, on purpose-built trails, with the Lyngen Alps as a backdrop. The restriction is on the high-altitude plateau. It does not affect the riding experience our guests are here for.

If you have questions about specific trails and whether they cross into the protected area, we are happy to advise at handover.

Midnight Sun E-Biking – Cycling in the Land of 24-Hour Daylight

Skibotn sits at 69°N. From late May through late July, the sun does not set. For cyclists, this changes everything.

— Long days

Ride at 11pm in Full Daylight

The midnight sun period in the Tromsø region runs from approximately **20 May to 26 July**. During those ten weeks, there is no darkness. The light at 10pm is golden and warm. The light at midnight is horizontal and soft. The trails are empty and the air is cool.

Most of our summer guests ride in the evening. They sleep in, explore Skibotn or the surrounding area through the day, and head out on the bike at 7 or 8pm – when the light is at its best and the trails are quietest. They come back at 11 or midnight, still in broad daylight, tired in the best way.

This is not something you can experience south of the Arctic Circle. The midnight sun is a genuine phenomenon, and a 24-hour e-bike rental is exactly the right format to experience it properly. You do not need a guided tour to see the sun not set. You just need a good bike and an open trail.

Best Months for Midnight Sun E-Biking Near Tromsø

May (from late May): The midnight sun begins around May 20. Trails are typically open but may have some residual snow at higher elevations. Quieter than peak season.

June: Peak midnight sun. The longest days, the warmest temperatures, and the most golden evening light. Our most popular month for e-bike rental.

July: Trails at their best condition. Many riders on the network; book your bike early. Still full midnight sun until July 26.

August: The sun begins to set again – first as a brief dip below the horizon, then increasingly. Still very long evenings (18–20 hours of daylight by mid-August). Autumn colours begin arriving in late August, turning the valley orange and gold.

September: Shorter days but spectacular autumn colour. Cooler temperatures. End of season – check availability closer to the date.

Family E-Bike Rental Near Tromsø – Suitable for All Ages

An e-bike rental near Tromsø is one of the most flexible summer activities you can do as a family. The electric assist means fitness level is not a barrier, and the Skibotn trail network has routes for everyone.

— everyone is welcome

Who Can Join

Adults of all fitness levels: The motor assists on every climb. You pedal as hard or as little as you choose. Guests with no cycling background and guests who race cross-country both enjoy the Specialized Levo on these trails.

Teenagers: Our bikes are sized from small (approximately 155 cm), which works for teenagers from around 14–15. Confident younger teenagers who are used to mountain biking can handle the intermediate trails with no difficulty.

Younger children: Our current fleet is adult-sized. For children under approximately 155 cm, we recommend contacting us in advance to discuss options – we may be able to advise on a suitable configuration or recommend an alternative activity. Our Visit Husky Kennel is open all summer and is a wonderful experience for children of any age.

Groups: Up to 5 people can rent bikes simultaneously (our full fleet). For groups larger than 5, contact us at booking@activenorth.no and we will discuss options, which may include a phased rental.

— tips and tricks

Tips for First-Time E-Bike Riders

1. Start on assist level 2 or 3 – not the maximum. You want to feel the bike and the trail, not be launched up every incline. Increase the level when you need it.
2. Expect the weight – the Specialized Levo weighs around 23 kg. It feels heavier than a standard bike at slow speeds. Trust the suspension and the wider tyres to absorb the terrain.
3. Plan your battery use – the range indicator on the display is accurate. If you are planning a long ride, keep your assist level lower on the easier sections and higher on the climbs.
4. Start with the valley floor – if you are unsure of your ability, the flat valley tracks are forgiving, beautiful, and a good way to get the feel of the bike before attempting any elevation.
5. Bring rain gear – Arctic weather changes fast. A waterproof layer adds negligible weight and can save a ride.

When to Go – E-Bike Rental Season Near Tromsø

Our e-bike rental season runs from May through September, dependent on trail conditions in early May and weather at the end of September.

May (from approx. 15 May): Trails open as snow melts. The midnight sun begins May 20. Quieter, with excellent trail conditions on the valley floor. Some higher-elevation trails may still be snow-covered until late May.

June: Our most popular month. Midnight sun at its peak, temperatures comfortable for riding (typically 12–18°C), trails in perfect condition.

July: Trails at their busiest. Book your specific bike size at least 4 weeks in advance. Midnight sun until July 26. Best all-round riding conditions.

August: Sun begins to set briefly, then increasingly. Long evenings remain excellent for riding. Autumn colours arrive in late August, transforming the valley.

September: Shorter days (but still 10–14 hours of daylight), cooler temperatures (5–12°C), spectacular autumn colour. End of season – book early and check availability.

Booking advice: We recommend booking at least 3–4 weeks ahead in June and July. Specific bike sizes (especially medium) book out first. Groups of 3 or more should book 4–6 weeks ahead.

Planning a Winter Trip? Skibotn Valley in Winter Is a Different World

If you are visiting in summer, it can be hard to imagine this valley covered in metres of snow. But Skibotn in winter – from December through March – is the departure point for our two signature winter experiences.

The same trails you cycle under the midnight sun become the dog sled and snowmobile routes when the snow arrives. The same family who hands over your e-bike in July runs the Arctic safaris in December. The experience is completely different. Both are extraordinary.

Dog Sledding Near Tromsø – Drive your own team of 70+ Alaskan huskies through Skibotn Valley. Season: December–March.
Snowmobile Safari Near Tromsø – Take the handlebars of a two-person snowmobile through the same mountain terrain. Season: December–March.
Visit Our Husky Kennel – Meet the dogs year-round. The kennel is open in summer too – you can combine an e-bike rental with a visit to the farm. The huskies don’t stop being interesting in July.

For beginners: valley floor tracks (15–30 km). For intermediate riders: forest climbs with panoramic views (25–45 km). For experienced MTB riders: technical singletrack. We are happy to recommend specific routes at your bike handover.

Is Skibotn good for mountain biking and e-biking?

Yes. Skibotn has an established reputation in the Norwegian mountain biking community as a destination with a dense, varied trail network. The valley’s geography – forested hillsides, open terrain above the tree line, and the Lyngen Alps as a backdrop – makes it exceptional for both mountain biking and e-biking. The electric assist means the network is accessible to a wider range of fitness levels than it would be on a standard bike.

Are e-bikes allowed in the Lyngen Alps?

E-bikes are not permitted within the Lyngen Alps landscape-protected area, which covers the high-altitude plateaux and mountain terrain. This is a national regulation that applies to protected areas across Norway. The Skibotn trail network – where our rental bikes are intended to be used – is outside the protected zone. Trails in the valley, forest, and lower hillsides are open to e-bikes. We will advise you at handover on which routes are unrestricted.

How hard is e-biking in Northern Norway?

With a good e-mountain bike, the terrain is more accessible than it appears. The Specialized Levo’s motor assist handles the majority of the climbing effort. Most guests with basic cycling ability are comfortable on the valley and forest trails. The technical singletrack sections require some mountain biking skill regardless of the motor. Start on the easier valley routes if you are unsure, and progress from there.

Is e-bike rental near Tromsø suitable for beginners?

Yes, for the easier trails. The valley floor and gravel tracks around Skibotn are ideal for first-time e-bike riders or those who are not regular cyclists. The electric assist compensates for fitness, and the full-suspension frame makes the terrain forgiving. We recommend downloading a beginner route from Trailforks before your rental day and sticking to the valley floor for your first few kilometres.

Can children hire e-bikes near Tromsø?

Our current fleet is adult-sized, with the smallest frame suitable for riders approximately 155 cm and taller. This is typically appropriate for teenagers from around 14–15. For younger children, we recommend contacting us in advance to discuss options. Our **[Visit Husky Kennel](/visit-husky-kennel-near-tromsoe/)** is open year-round and is an excellent summer activity for families with children of all ages.

What does the midnight sun mean for cycling near Tromsø?

The midnight sun in the Tromsø region runs from approximately 20 May to 26 July. During this period, the sun does not set. This means you can ride at any time of day – including 10pm, 11pm, or midnight – in full daylight. The evening light (typically 8–11pm) is golden and directional, and the trails are quieter than during the day. Our 24-hour rental is designed for exactly this kind of riding.

What is the e-bike rental season near Tromsø?

Our rental season runs from mid-May through September. June and July are the peak months, combining the best trail conditions with the midnight sun. August offers excellent riding with the first hints of autumn colour. May and September are available but check ahead on trail conditions.
