Yes — in Norway, a valid driver’s licence is required to operate a snowmobile. Any national driver’s licence is accepted, so make sure to bring it with you on the day. If you don’t hold a driver’s licence, you’re very welcome to join the tour as a passenger. You’ll still get the full experience — the stunning Arctic landscapes, the hot lunch at camp, and the ride through Skibotn valley — you just won’t take a turn behind the handlebars.

Absolutely — no previous experience is needed. Snowmobiles are surprisingly intuitive to operate, and before heading out your English-speaking guide will walk you through everything: how to accelerate, brake, and handle the machine safely on the trail. Two people share each snowmobile and swap halfway, so there’s no pressure to be an expert from the start. The vast majority of our guests are first-timers, and most feel completely comfortable within the first few minutes on the trail.

We provide everything you need: a full thermal snowmobile suit, boots, mittens, and a helmet are all included with your booking. Underneath, wear your own thermal base layer and wool socks — the kind you’d pack for a cold winter day. Avoid jeans or cotton, as these hold moisture and get cold quickly. Temperatures in Skibotn valley can drop well below -15°C, especially with wind chill at speed, so a warm mid-layer under your suit is always a good idea.

In fact, a fresh snowfall often makes for the best riding conditions. You’ll join a small group, which means you’ll share the experience with a handful of other guests rather than heading out alone — and since two people share each snowmobile, you’ll be paired up on the trail. Solo travellers regularly tell us it’s one of the best ways to meet fellow adventurers in Northern Norway. Our groups are kept small deliberately, so the experience always feels personal rather than crowded.

We recommend booking as early as possible. The snowmobile safari season runs from 15 December to 31 March, and the most popular dates — particularly around Christmas, New Year, and February half-term — sell out weeks in advance. If you’re visiting in January or early March on a weekday, you may find more availability, but early booking always secures your preferred date and departure time.
