Dog Sledding & Snowmobile Safari near Tromsø – Arctic Combo Tour from Skibotn

Why choose one Arctic adventure when you can do both in a single day? Our combo tour near Tromsø combines the raw power of a snowmobile safari with the timeless thrill of mushing your own team of Alaskan huskies — all from our family base in Skibotn, just 1.5 hours from Tromsø. In the morning, you'll open the throttle and head deep into the Arctic wilderness on a snowmobile, carving through snow-covered forests and open mountain valleys. In the afternoon, the huskies take over — ears forward, tails up, pulling hard through the same landscapes you just explored on a machine. Two completely different ways to experience the Arctic. One unforgettable day. No experience needed for either activity. Our English-speaking guides have been running adventures in this corner of Northern Norway since 2007 — this is our backyard, and we can't wait to share both sides of it with you.

Our Arctic combo tour near Tromsø gives you the best of both worlds — a snowmobile safari and a dog sledding safari on the same day, deep in the wilderness of Skibotn valley. The day starts on a snowmobile. After a safety briefing and driving instructions from your English-speaking guide, you'll head out on approved trails through snow-covered forests and open Arctic plateaus. Two people share each snowmobile and swap halfway, so everyone gets time behind the handlebars. No previous experience needed — the machines are intuitive, and your guide is with you the entire way. Then the huskies take over. Your team of Alaskan huskies will greet you with excited barking before pulling you through the same Arctic landscapes — this time in near silence, powered by paws instead of an engine. Take turns mushing your own sled, feel the rhythm of the pack, and experience a side of Northern Norway that most visitors never get to see. Between activities, warm up at Helligskogen Fjellstue with a hot bowl of soup, fresh bread, and coffee. By the time the bus drops you back in Tromsø, you'll have lived two completely different Arctic adventures in a single day. Season:
15 December – 31 March

Meeting point: 08:00 outside Scandic Ishavshotel, Tromsø — look for the Activenorth bus, which departs at 08:15. We arrive at Helligskogen Fjellstue around 10:30, and you'll be back in Tromsø by approximately 20:00.
Duration: Around 6 hours at camp, including preparation, safety briefing, approximately 1 hour 30 minutes of snowmobiling, 1 hour of dog sledding, lunch, and time with the dogs. You'll arrive with the first bus from Tromsø — departing at 08:15 and arriving at Helligskogen Fjellstue around 10:30. While the first group returns at 14:00, you stay on for the dog sledding safari before heading back with the second bus, arriving in Tromsø by approximately 18:00. The drive through the fjords and mountain passes is scenic and well worth it — and with a full day in the Arctic, you'll have time to experience both activities properly without rushing.
Important — driver's licence: A valid driver's licence is required to operate a snowmobile in Norway — any national driver's licence is accepted. Don't forget to bring it on the day. If you don't hold a driver's licence, you're very welcome to join as a passenger.

Frequently asked questions about snowmobile near Tromsø

What's included in the Arctic combo tour near Tromsø?
The Arctic combo tour includes both a snowmobile safari and a dog sledding safari on the same day — making it the most complete Arctic adventure we offer at Activenorth. All equipment for both activities is included: a full thermal snowmobile suit, boots, mittens, and helmet for the snowmobile safari, and a warm Arctic suit and gloves for the dog sledding. A hot reindeer soup lunch with fresh bread, coffee and tea is served between the two activities at Helligskogen Fjellstue, and return transfer from Tromsø is included throughout. In short — you show up, we take care of everything else.
Do I need a driver's licence for the Arctic combo tour near Tromsø?
A valid driver's licence is required to operate the snowmobile — any national driver's licence is accepted, so remember to bring it on the day. If you don't hold a driver's licence, you're very welcome to join as a passenger on the snowmobile and still take full part in the dog sledding safari. No licence is required to mush a dog sled — your guide will walk you through everything before heading out, and the vast majority of our guests have never done it before.
How long is the Arctic combo tour from Tromsø?
This is a full-day Arctic adventure. The bus departs from outside Scandic Ishavshotel in Tromsø at 08:15, arriving at our base at Helligskogen Fjellstue around 10:30. You'll spend approximately 7.5 hours at camp, with the snowmobile safari in the morning and the dog sledding safari in the afternoon, plus lunch and time with the dogs in between. The return bus departs camp at 18:00, arriving back in Tromsø at approximately 20:00. It's a long day — and one of the most memorable you'll have in Northern Norway.
Can beginners do both dog sledding and snowmobiling on the same day?
Absolutely — both activities are designed for complete beginners, and the combo tour is no exception. Before the snowmobile safari, your English-speaking guide will give you a full safety briefing and driving instructions. Before the dog sledding, you'll receive a separate briefing on how to handle the sled and communicate with the dogs. The two activities complement each other well — the snowmobile gives you speed and power, while the dog sledding is quieter and more intimate. Most guests are surprised by how different the two experiences feel, even in the same landscape.
What should I wear on a full-day Arctic combo tour in Northern Norway?
All the outerwear you need for both activities is provided — thermal snowmobile suit, boots, mittens, and helmet for the morning, and a warm Arctic sledding suit for the afternoon. Underneath, wear your own thermal base layer and wool socks for both. Since this is a full day outdoors in the Arctic — with temperatures that can drop well below -15°C — we recommend an extra mid-layer for additional warmth, especially during the snowmobile ride where wind chill adds to the cold. Avoid jeans or cotton at all times, as these hold moisture and get cold quickly.
Is the dog sledding and snowmobile combo tour suitable for families?
Yes — the combo tour is one of our most popular choices for families visiting Tromsø in winter. Children from age 5 can join the dog sledding safari, and younger children can ride as passengers on both the snowmobile and the sled while an adult drives. The long day at camp gives families plenty of time between activities to explore, meet the dogs, and enjoy lunch together without feeling rushed. Our guides are experienced with guests of all ages, and the small group format means children always get plenty of attention. It's the kind of day that families talk about long after the trip is over.
