Dog Sledding on Wheels near Tromsø – Summer Husky Safari from Skibotn

Think dog sledding is only for winter? Think again. Our summer husky safari near Tromsø lets you mush your own team of Alaskan huskies through the Arctic wilderness of Skibotn — no snow required, no experience needed, just you and a team of dogs that were born to run. On a specially designed wheel cart, you'll feel the full power of the pack as your huskies pull you through forest trails and open valley landscapes, with the Lyngen Alps rising around you. The dogs don't care what season it is — ears forward, tails up, they love this just as much in June as they do in January. Take turns driving and riding, get to know your team, and finish the day with a warm meal at the camp before the scenic drive back to Tromsø. We've been running sled dogs in this corner of Northern Norway since 2007. Summer or winter, this is our family, our land, and our pack — and we can't wait to share it with you.

Frequently asked questions about dog sledding on wheels near Tromsø

We had an amazing SUMMER FUN DAY HUSKY SLEDGE RIDE on wheels at Active North. Tomas and his assistants where friendly and made us feel at ease. Conversation flowed freely the whole time. They went out of their way to book us in before the start of winter season. It was a most amazing sight and humorous to see the dogs barking with excitement because they were eager to get going. Then, as we started moving the dogs went suddenly quite as they followed their given commands. The dogs happily carried us around with ease. We were allowed to steer the sledges for a time which was EXHILARATING! We will have to come back and do it again in the snowy season.

"I booked dog sledding on wheels with Activenorth and we had an unforgettable experience. The dog sledding was exciting and so much fun. Our guides were friendly, knowledgeable and happy to answer all our questions about the dogs. We also had a great time in the kennel and got to feed some of them. Total: fantastic."

Very fun experience. Guides were very helpful and friendly, and the dogs were extatic throughout the experience. Also had an unexpected complimentary soup lunch in a local hotel afterwards. Lovely wintery experience.

Frequently asked questions about snowmobile near Tromsø

What is dog sledding on wheels near Tromsø?
Dog sledding on wheels is exactly what it sounds like — mushing a team of Alaskan huskies through the Arctic wilderness, but on a specially designed wheel cart instead of a snow sled. It means you can experience the full thrill of dog sledding near Tromsø in summer and autumn, when there's no snow on the ground. The dogs don't know the difference — they're just as eager, just as fast, and just as happy to run. At Activenorth, we use Troll carts built specifically for this purpose, and the trails through Skibotn valley are just as beautiful in autumn colours as they are in winter white.
Can beginners try dog sledding on wheels near Tromsø?
Absolutely — no experience is needed whatsoever. When you arrive at our base in Skibotn, your English-speaking guide will walk you through everything: how to harness the dogs, how to steer the cart, how to brake, and how to communicate with your team. You'll even get to help put the dogs into harness before heading out — a favourite moment for most guests. Two people share each cart and swap halfway, so everyone gets time as the musher. The activity is mildly physically challenging but suitable for most fitness levels.
When is the season for dog sledding on wheels near Tromsø?
Our dog sledding on wheels safari runs during summer and autumn — typically from June through to October, depending on temperatures. The activity is available as long as the temperature stays below 13°C, which ensures the dogs are comfortable and performing at their best. September and October tend to be the most popular months, when the valley is full of autumn colours and the air is crisp. If snow arrives early, we simply switch to sleds at no extra charge — so whatever the weather, the adventure goes ahead.
What should I wear on a summer dog sledding on wheels tour in Northern Norway?
We provide full suits, boots, mittens and hats for all guests — so you don't need any specialist gear. Underneath, wear your own thermal base layer and wool or fleece mid-layer, especially on cooler autumn days. Avoid jeans or cotton as these hold moisture and get cold quickly. September and October mornings in Skibotn can be chilly even when the sun is out, so layering is always a good idea. The activity takes place entirely outdoors, so dress for the weather rather than assuming it will be warm.
Is dog sledding on wheels suitable for children and families near Tromsø?
Yes — this is one of our most family-friendly summer activities near Tromsø. Children can ride as passengers on the cart while an adult musher drives, making it accessible for younger guests too. The huskies are sociable, well-used to guests of all ages, and love the attention. Between the trail ride and lunch, there's plenty of time for children to meet the dogs up close, help with watering them, and take photos. Families consistently tell us this is the highlight of their trip to Northern Norway — and it's easy to see why.
How far in advance should I book dog sledding on wheels from Tromsø?
We recommend booking as early as possible, particularly for September and October when demand is highest and group sizes are capped at 20 guests. Weekends fill up fastest, but even midweek departures can sell out during peak autumn season. If you're visiting in June or July you may find more availability, but early booking always guarantees your preferred date and group size. To reserve your spot on the Activenorth dog sledding on wheels safari, book directly through our booking partner — and don't forget the bus departs Tromsø at 09:00, so plan your morning accordingly.
